Launching on PC this September

GalaxyTrail has finally confirmed Freedom Planet 2 will be coming to the Nintendo Switch, as well as Xbox and PlayStation. All of these console ports are "now in development" and are scheduled for release in Summer 2023.

The release schedule for PC and Linux remains on track - launching on these platforms next month:

Here's a brief look at what the game will have to offer when it's eventually released on the Nintendo Switch:

While you wait, be sure to check out the original game on the Switch eShop, which draws inspiration from 16-bit platform classics like Sonic the Hedgehog. Read more in our Nintendo Life review.

When he’s not paying off a loan to Tom Nook, Liam likes to report on the latest Nintendo news and admire his library of video games. His favourite Nintendo character used to be a guitar-playing dog, but nowadays he prefers to hang out with Judd the cat.

Best non-Sonic Sonic game ever. 👍

Yes I’m so excited!!

Summer 2023 is a long wait, but I am so happy that it's confirmed to be ported to the switch. I loved the first game and I wonder how the sequel is gonna turn out. I can HARDLY WAIT!

I've never heard of this series, but looks super cute. Telling us we have to wait a year is a tease though.

Well it's about damn time! I feel like i heard about freedom planet 2 around 4 years ago and it still hasn't come out yet. Seriously like WTF is the hold up?

Had a great time playing the first one on WiiU. Will definitely be picking this up.

@FishyS Go play the first one. If you like mascot platformers you'll dig it.

A bit of a bummer the Switch version will take that long, but I'm just glad we have a release window now.

PC version releases right in the middle of my vacation, so might double-dip. Don't feel like waiting until the Switch version comes and I don't mind supporting this great little franchise ^_^

I forgot I got half way through the first game and got distracted by another game, need to go back and finish it at some point. Was a very good Sonic-a-like

Finally we're getting a release date for this

Strange....I swear I played 2 legit 5+ years ago on pc?....might've been a demo I guess. The designs imo were not as good as 1. I def played 2 a little over halfway thru the trailer gameplay wise.

Not overly keen on the new art direction. I prefer the 16 bit looking graphics on the original.

Good thing I have a decent PC because I am beyond sick of waiting for this game. Almost forgot it was even a thing really.

@Truegamer79 indie games tend to take forever to come out...that's kind of just how it is if you've been following them for a while. At least...that's the case with anything that isn't a garbage/generic rogue lite or mid tier metroidvania.

That being said..it's kind of crazy that it's going to take a whole ass year for this to be ported to consoles after already being delayed 20 times by now. I'd be able to understand it better if it were some taxing fully 3D title or something...but I have to wonder what's the story behind this? Usually in the case of these 2D games they may take a couple weeks or (worst case) months to come over to at least one console.

I'm at the point where any 3rd party game saying "Switch 2023" is going to go the way of all those failed projects on Wii U - Yookalayee, Kerbal, Cars - and only release on Switch 2 or whatever it's called.

Switch may very well get games for 10 years but that doesn't mean it's successor is waiting that long to launch, 7 or 8 years should do it.

Can't wait to get this on Switch. That reminds me, I need to beat the first game on Wii U.

The first one was very good, I got very invested in the characters and the world building. If imitation is the highest form of flattery, then this game flatters Sonic more than any other imitator.

Time to dust off the ol’ Wii U for a proper go-round of the first Freedom Planet. Never did give it my full attention but I think it probably deserves it.

I'll pass. The physics of the first one didn't feel right, and stages went on WAY too long.

Getting this on PC, I waited long enough.

I can't believe this game is finally coming out next month. At one point I was beginning to think the Team had canned the whole thing. September 13th can't come soon enough.

@rjejr I'm ready for Switch 2... but 2023 is only 6 years. Taking your point, these things tend to get delayed, though, and if it goes into 2024, then it gets interesting.

I'm really at a loss at what Nintendo should do with its next hardware. I'd be fine with an expensive powerful TV console alongside a boosted hybrid or handheld that were compatible.

Sort of a "Pro" for couch potatoes thing — Switch couch PROtato — alongside a separate compatible this-is-the-best-we-could-perform-in-a-handheld Switch 2 (that can dock, too).

Seems like a marketing and sales disaster, though, right?

@Clyde_Radcliffe Something is up with the graphics. Seems a mix of higher resolution and some sort of filter put on lower resolution graphics in places. It does give me some fond nostalgia for that time when 3D took over and only a few games tried traditional pixel art but at higher resolution in 2D. Some Saturn games...

Overall, though, the character animations and art seems really well done. Feels like some serious refinements would help the overall gestalt.

Might just get it on PC.

@aaronsullivan I think you're trying to market Wii U 2, not Switch 2. 😂

I don't play handheld - though maybe some Fortnite on vacation next week as I'm addicted and need to play an hour a day - so I'm still down for Switch TV but I really don't know anymore. When my youngest goes to college in a year I don't know if I'll have any reason to buy a Switch 2. I have a PS5, may just make due, I don't game as much as I used too.

Unless a Switch TV 2 comes out in the next 9 months and I buy that and give the kid the old Switch to take to college? 🤷‍♂️

Where you around when I was enjoying turning 50 every day for like an entire month on here? I just turned 57, geez. That's geez as in J. H.C. not geezer, but it may as well be. 😝

Why does it take one full year to get it to consoles?

I should give the first game another chance sometime. I was enjoying it at first but the later levels didn't click with me.

@rjejr I think I'm "stuck" with Nintendo for a long while. I'm just too big a fan of the main franchises (Metroid, Zelda, Mario) and the Nintendo creativity, and proclivity for well-polished, good-natured fun and quirkiness.

I have one more year before my oldest is headed to college. And my youngest has 4 more to go. So, I'm a bit behind you, there. Congrats on getting them there. It has been such a rough world to push them out into.

Happy birthday, though! I'm recovering from getting a kidney removed right now, so feeling a bit older than the age on the tin.

With a nice, bright, 4k OLED, I really do enjoy the extra fidelity of games made for higher end hardware. (and TV/movies, of course), so I'll probably snag a PS5 when the time is right. Probably when the Jedi: Survivor game comes out.

Enjoy your vacation. As much as I talk about having a TV-only Switch option, I'd probably end up with a separate hybrid option, too, anyway. We bring it on trips and vacation and it is really handy, even in those occasions when someone just wants to play and the TV is in use. Nintendo really did it right, this generation.

If they take the money that they apparently saved on voice actors, and invest it in game play, it could be pretty good.
