Video: Persona 5 Royal Side-By-Side Comparison (Switch, Xbox, PS4) - Nintendo Life

Launching on Nintendo Switch this October

After years of rumours, Persona 5 Royal has now been officially confirmed for the Switch. It will be coming to Nintendo's system on the same day as Xbox, on 21st October this year.

If you're wondering how it compares to the Xbox and PlayStation versions of the games, GameXplain has published a side-by-side comparison video. It shows the animated cutscenes as well as actual gameplay.

While the Switch version is expected to have a lower resolution and frame rate, it seems to be running at an acceptable standard. Persona 5 was originally released on PS3 and PS4 in 2016 and was followed by Persona 5 Royal in 2019.

Persona 5 Royal on the Switch will be followed by Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable next year. You can get the full rundown in our original story:

Will you be picking up the Switch version of Persona 5 Royal? Leave a comment down below.

When he’s not paying off a loan to Tom Nook, Liam likes to report on the latest Nintendo news and admire his library of video games. His favourite Nintendo character used to be a guitar-playing dog, but nowadays he prefers to hang out with Judd the cat.

The Switch version looks just about on par, just less crisp

Isn't this the same trailer? I wouldn't expect them to bother capturing the exact same footage for every version.

The Switch version definitely looks on par for the system. A little blurry and muddy but still looks great overall; P5's art style absolutely lends itself to that.

I mean you can't forget, Persona 5 also released on the PS3, and Royal wasn't different enough to make it a demanding game. It has no reason to run like crap, so of course, it'll runs great on Switch.

It's like Bread 2, it should work on the previous generation of toasters even if it launched with the current generation of toasters.

@woopox exactly what I was thinking.

I'm sure it will look amazing on my Switch OLED screen! It will be nice to play P5R in portable mode. October will be a great month with this and RE Village Gold Edition!

Wow. I was already pleased with the recent releases brought to Switch then there is Live A Live, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3 and Pokemon Scarlet & Violet.

Now we have Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, Nier Automata and Persona 5 Royal which are all releasing in October. In my opinion, this is better than 2017.

Looks the Switch version looks pretty decent. A little bit muddy, but not a big deal if you play it handheld

Looking good! Can't wait to experience 5 when it comes to the Switch.

@Xiovanni And that's a good thing!

Fine by me! Definitely picking up!

I think it's same trailer

It took Atlus a while, but it looks like they made a mighty fine port. Persona 5 Royal really needed to be on a portable system, glad we're finally getting that.

I honestly can't see a difference, I feel like they make these videos deliberately vague sometimes.

Is this some sort of test?

It looks identical. This is dumb.

I wonder what this means for the future of Persona. Persona 6 on everything day one or back to PlayStation exclusivity for an age? If there’s no back room deal with Sony which I don’t think has ever been proven to be the case (and assuming they don’t make one going forwards) it’d be dumb to go back to ignoring everything else again

Honestly not too bothered as long as it runs well and looks reasonable as you'd expect on the Switch. The footage looks good.

I find it interesting how Nintendo Life still reports on GameXplain videos despite the controversy around them, which even effected former NL staffer Jon Cartwright. Not that I'm hating on it or anything, as I'm actually still subscribed to the channel myself and watch it every now and then.

I follow André on Twitter, and he's been a super nice guy from my interactions with him. I definitely think he made some major mistakes, but I hope he's taken the opportunity to learn from them and grow as a person. His new employees all seem to be happy, so I hope he's treating them well. I'm an adamant believer in second chances.

The only thing I'm worried about is the size of the game's data; I hope it is all there on the game card.

Switch version clearly the best.

@eltomo Agreed! If you are not joking off course.

@anoyonmus Home console with handheld being a 2nd option buf ok.

@woopox Exactly, and comparing trailers isn't the wisest thing to do given that the publishers will never show the choppy portions of the game in a reveal like this. Not saying this will be choppy, but if it is, we have to wait till the game comes out or at least someone has a hands on. Fingers crossed.

We all need to worry about October! It will be a wallet destroyer!

The only difference I can see is Joker's backpack is brown on the switch and black on xbox, ps4. It looks great though and I am super excited to be able to play this handheld.

@Not_Soos oh, wait! What are you talking about? What kind of problem DF have? Thank you in advance

@TheMelodiusRose Comparing identical things doesn't make any sense. They could've just said it's identical with other versions.

@RCGamer No, the side-by-side comparison video shared in this article comes from GameXplain, not Digital Foundry.

This is the kind of the games were the graphics are not the most important, but still, It's really looks good. For me, if p5 is even a little similar p4, this is will best christmas present ever. I will buy the 3 of them, and, I beat I will never will finish them, but really will enjoy playing them.

@nathantl84 Same for me for TV tho.

@Cia Ahhhhh...you are right! All of them does look the same.

Persona was never technically stunning, it's the art direction that makes it look gorgeous. So should be great on Switch and great for a portable system due to its length.

@larryisaman I would have to assume there was some exclusivity deal that just expired this year. The same would likely apply to Nintendo with new Shin Megami Tensei games. I just wish Atlus would openly speak up about whether or not this is true.

Persona isn't graphically intensive, so obviously it shouldn't be anywhere close to a downgrade.

Is this actual footage from the versions or just guess work? The trailer isn’t actual footage and non news.

I don’t believe Atlus would provide that this early.

@Cia I don’t think it’s real, switch will have lower res. Look at Persona 5 Strikers or Catherine Full Body for rough idea.

I don't quite understand why Nintendolife posts these kinds of articles. Unless the game has obviously got issues from the trailer there is an expectation that there will be some graphical downgrade. These trailers look almost identical to each other and we won't see any substantial difference till the game is out and we can peak at the less polished areas. I'm more curious about Nier Automata than I am about Persona 5 Royal (which is a PS3 game and Royal did not make it anymore demanding just expanded the game's content). Nier is an open-world game and more likely to have graphical issues if there are any (P* does know the Switch like the back of their hands at this point).

@ModdedInkling I would be very happy for PS5 and XSX/XSS owners if SMT4 + Apocalypse and SMT5 came out for their systems of choice. Such amazing games! Atlus seems to have a lot of backroom deals they don't discuss. On one level that is awesome as you never quite know what they're working on as they are as secretive as Nintendo. On the other it is frustrating as you never quite know when you're favourite series will get a release... still waiting on Etrian Odyssey VI news or even hope for Etrian Odyssey III Retold...

I’ve had P3P since its PSP launch and P4G on Vita via import before it launched in the UK. Then I naturally bought vanilla P5 on PS4 on launch.

AND STILL HAVEN’T FINISHED ANY OF THEM

but sure, I’ll buy P5R on Switch day one 😂

Haha, this is the most ridiculous and confusing comparison video I have seen.

This is great and all but now We have a different problem we have to rally together to tell Atlus we want Persona 4 golden and persona 3 portable PHYSICAL VERSIONS ASWELL cause there not physical for all consoles there coming out on thats awful ;_; i wanna hold these achievements on a pedestal but i can't

Corporate needs you to find the differences between this video, this video and this video.

@MidySeaCloud Given that Golden is $20 on steam I'm betting on the same for P3P. I'm sure people would be willing to pay $60 for a double pack, assuming both games could fit on a Switch card. P4G is bigger than I expected on Steam at 13gb.

Who knows, maybe they'll work out something with Limited Run or we'll get an Asia English version.

should never compare switch versions of games with ps5 as it will look worse...as long as it runs great that is not a issue we all the limitations of the switch..

Next compare the load times!

@Murbs I’m going for Persona 3 Portable and Persona 5 Royal

@ModdedInkling didn’t Nintendo publish SMT V for PAL Regions?

@anoyonmus Yes, but that doesn't necessarily affect a game's exclusivity. Dragon Quest XI S was published by Nintendo in NA and PAL before it got released on other platforms with Square-Enix as the publisher.

Really looking forward to playing P5 on the switch, I loved P4 Golden on the vita and held off getting P5 on PS3 because my game play time doesn't suit not being able to put it to sleep any time and pickup, the great thing about games being built on common engines like the unreal engine is whilst a platform is supported then porting is pretty cost effective, great to see the series get the cross platform it deserves, I'll be tempted to pickup all 3 even though I purchased the others for my vita, switch will offer the best of both worlds to me with handheld and living room play 🙂
